Just because it’s the dead of summer doesn’t mean that you have to be drinking Hefeweizen and Kolsch. There are some great high gravity brews you can enjoy during the summer without feeling overwhelmed or too heavy.
Here are my suggestions.
Old Chub – Oskar Blues
This Scotch Ale clocks in at 8% (ABV) and doesn’t fill you up like beers of similar alcohol content. One of the most universally loved brews in America, Old Chub pairs well with burger and relaxing by the pool.
Hop Slayer – Wild Onion Brewery
This is a great brew for fans of the almighty hop. With a super strong nose and 8% ABV this beer is easily sluggable during the warm summer months.
Torpedo- Sierra Nevada
Before companies like Sam Adam’s jumped on the IPA train Sierra Neveda had it’s own high gravity IPA. Listed as one of Nick Offerman’s favorite beers the Torpedo hits you with a strong flavor of malted hops. The great thing about Torpedo is that it can be found in virtually any grocery store across the nation.
Abrasive Ale- Surly Brewing
As the name suggests, Abrasive Ale is not for lovers of the light beer. With a large frothy head this Minneapolis based brewing company has crafted a powerhouse brew with a delightfully tasty oats and hops.
