Like many craft brewers, Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers started their careers working full time jobs but later switched to their passion; brewing beer. After struggling for many years the pair threw out the book and started crafting delicious aromatic brews with only the finest hops and barley. Since their founding in 1996 Founders has won numerous awards including the 2013 European Beer Star Gold Award for Herb and Spice beer and a bronze medal for their baltic-style porter.
Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Founders has a wide variety of beers that are quite incredible here are some of their best seasonal and active brews.
Founders Centennial IPA
A great mild IPA with a frothy head and a floral bouquet. Filled with citrus notes and an abundance of dry hopped sweet flavors. This brew is perfect for somebody who casually enjoys IPAs.
The winner of European Beer Star’s Bronze medal is the Founders Porter which pours silky black with a nice creamy tan head. The brew has strong chocolate and coffee notes but is not totally overwhelming in flavor.
(Seasonal) Founders Rubaeus
I have said before that I am not a fan of wheat beer, but here we are again! This deliciously red brew has overwhelming flavor of raspberries which are added at nearly all phases of fermentation. This brew is the perfect blend of sweet and tart.
(Seasonal) Founders Curmudgeon Old Ale
The Curmudgeon Old Ale has a walloping 9.8% ABV and evokes flavors of the old world. An extremely malty brew that is deceptively drinkable, Curmudgeon Old Ale makes me want to grab a turkey leg and snag away.
(Seasonal) Founders Backwoods Bastard
Founders Backwoods Bastard is an even heavier beer with 10.2% ABV and it’s my favorite of the bunch. With a light scotchy flavor that excites the palate Backwoods Bastard is a beer lovers victorious undertaking.
