Considered a Holy Grail among craft beer purists, Pliny the Younger is a relic only worthy of adept adventurers in the same league as Indiana Jones. The majority of locations fortunate enough to tap these kegs typically run dry in their annual wares within a matter of hours. The rarity of this pint has a tendency to bring dutiful beer geeks out in droves.
Pliny the Younger is the most coveted offering from Russian River Brewing Company, a California-based brewery. Described as an American Double (nearly Triple) or Imperial IPA, this beer measures out to a staggering 11% ABV. Although we have yet to sample it ourselves, the nose is described as intensely floral and loaded with hopped up character. With a balanced body and deceptively smooth finish, this winter ale is a serious labor of love.
Why is Pliny the Younger so hard to find? The annual batch is relatively small in terms of placating the entire country. Russian River reports the beer is incredibly time and space consuming, making it extremely difficult to make without interrupting daily brewing operations.
Want to know where you can find Pliny the Younger for yourself? Although you’ll need to wait until 2015 at this point, Russian River provides the following guide. Should you be so lucky, prepare to wait in line for hours!
