Chicago is a great city for beer. Some of the best breweries in the U.S. live in The Windy City. Just a block away from Wrigley Stadium is the famous Goose Island brewery. There is Revolution Brewery which makes one of the best IPA’s I have ever had. Then there is Three Floyds brewery, while technically located in Munster, Indiana whenever a keg of Floyds is tapped at a bar in Chicago the masses celebrate.
They don’t ship their brews to the Southwest so it’s been a tough couple months since I’ve visited Chicago. Here are some of my favorite brews from Three Floyds Brewing.
Three Floyds Gumballhead
If you are in a bar in Chicago and you see they have Gumballhead on special cancel your order and buy this beer. It’s usually only shipped to The Windy City in bottles and they only ship a couple hundred to each bar at a time. There were times I would be at a bar that just got a shipment and it would take only three hours before the entire stock was gone. The best wheat beer that I have ever had Gumballhead is a light red wheat beer with a nice lemony finish. The beer is so popular it’s label has inspired some to get tattoos.
Three Floyds Dreadnaught
If you think that Stone’s Arrogant Bastard Ale is intense then stray away from Three Floyds Dreadnaught. The Dreadnaught is an Imperial IPA that is deliciously hoppy and high in alcohol content. Clocking in at 9.5% ABV Dreadnaught has a complex flavor with citrus, mango and peach aromas with a strong caramel malt backbone. If you like IPA’s don’t skip the Dreadnaught.
Three Floyds Zombie Dust
Probably the most popular of Three Floyds beers Zombie Dust is a simple pale ale. Intensely hopped like most of Three Floyds brews the Zombie Dust is served on draft at most ale houses and bars in the Illinois Area. When tasting it you might mistake this for an IPA at first but it has a super smooth feel with a creamy after taste.
Three Floyds Alpha King
Three Floyds’ flagship veer, Alpha King is an American Pale Ale that is similar to the Zombie Dust. A creamy dark deep amber this brew is made with Centennial, Cascade and Warrior hops giving it an intense citrus aroma and crisp hoppy finish.
