I enjoy celebrating the holiday season just as much as the next guy, but dealing with those not-so-pleasant family members and annoying high school friends you only pretend to enjoy all in town at the same time, it takes a lot of alcohol to keep from getting too irritated. While wine makes sleep and some spirits give me more of a headache than some of my family members, there’s only one other place to turn — beer.
One of my favorite parts about the holiday season is the fact that brewers from around the country also take part in celebrating (sometimes I feel as though they too realize the stress behind visiting with friends and relatives) by dishing out some of the best brews of the year. Below, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite beers to have on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and even my favorites to keep you held over between then and the New Year.
Top 3 Best Christmas Beers
Christmas Ale — Breckenridge Brewery
Clearly, the folks at Breckenridge out in Colorado know how to craft a beer specifically for the holiday season. Weighing in at 7.o% ABV, the Christmas Ale is a fantastic combination of the best parts of a red ale with your favorite parts of a vanilla-flavored stout, and with a caramel aftertaste, your stomach will stay warm all throughout the cold Christmas evening. Easily drinkable, tasty, and with just a little bitterness at the tail end, the Christmas Ale from Breckenridge Brewery is perfect for your at-dinner beer.
Snow Cap Ale — Pyramid Breweries
Best known for their fresh, crisp taste, Pyramid Breweries also boasts one of the best beers for the holiday season: Snow Cap Ale. “Brewed in the spirit of Christmas ales,” this malty brew has a surprise kick of hops right when you least expect it — kind of like when your aunt Sue decides to take her wig off at Christmas dinner. With earthy tones and a strong nutty head, the 7.0% ABV Snow Cap Ale brings a warmness best served out of the tap — if you can get out of the house to go try it!
Alaskan Winter Ale — Alaskan Brewing Company
Where would you expect to find a better winter beer other than the frigid cold winter of Alaska? The Alaskan Brewing Company’s Alaskan Winter Ale is by far one of the most complex and interesting winter beers, as it combines the fresh aromas of spruce tips with the bold and heavy flavor of noble hops and traditional malts. The beer is a favorite not only to people all across the country, but more specifically the people near the Alaskan Brewing Company brew house, as the aroma of the spruce tips define the changing of seasons and the necessity of a good Warmer beer.
